In June we celebrate Pride month!
June is Pride Month, and while our little city in the northwest might be nestled between the mountains and away from the urban pride festivals in the lower mainland, our community spirit and inclusiveness is still something to celebrate.
Whether you’re a local, a road tripper, or just stopping through, Terrace is proud to be a welcoming space for everyone. Here are a few ways you can show your pride or be an ally while visiting Terrace.
Connect with the Terrace Pride Pals
Looking to meet like-minded locals or attend a Pride-themed gathering? Start with the Terrace Pride Pals – a welcoming group that hosts meet-ups and special events for LGBTQIA2+ folks and allies. This group often hosts get-togethers, social events and Pride events throughout the year. From walks at Ferry Island, to fancy galas to a monthly board game night for all ages – connect with the Pride Pals on their Facebook Page to learn more.
Read a rainbow!
This month the Terrace Public Library’s feature book display celebrates Pride month, LGBTQIA2S+ readers and authors with lots of book selections to choose from. The library is a welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
Get your sweat on and support Pride Pals!
Shout out to local yoga studio Evolve who has been celebrating Pride all month long with movement, music and connection. They’ve been offering daily donation-based classes that raise funds and awareness for the LGBTQIAS2+ community. Proceeds from the daily classes go to the Terrace Pride Pals and Qmunity — two organizations doing important work.
Also a shout out to Heal Yoga that recently received an Honourable Mention from the Skeena Diversity Society for offering sliding-scales, LGBTQ+ scholarships and outreach programs to Indigenous communities.
Capture a rainbow!
Kermode Friendship Society mural “As She Dance” – this mural painted by the Raven Tacuara Indigenous art collective honours awareness about MMIWG but is also a tribute to diversity and inclusion. Take a photo with the rainbow-inspired woven cedar bark motif that wraps around the back and sides of the building.
Take a selfie at the Rainbow crosswalk on Park Ave. at George Little Park.
Make the steps at the office of Coast Mountains School District #82 your backdrop for a rainbow filled photo.
Pay your respects at the MMIWG tribute pole on Highway 16 across from Kitsumkalum. It also features a rainbow flag element, paying tribute to LGBTQIA2+ people.
Happy Pride everyone!
(PS – We know there are lots of Pride-friendly activities, organizations and businesses out there in the Terrace area – drop Tourism Terrace a message so we can include your upcoming events in our events page or in a future blog post)
