Trail Experience & Artistic Features

Ferry Island’s 3.5 km loop trail is flat, well-maintained, and winds through second-growth forest along the Skeena River. It’s ideal for walking, jogging, strollers, casual biking, and leashed dogs.

Along the trail, visitors will encounter:

Carved Tree Faces

Over 55 carvings by local artist Rick Goyette are hidden in trees and stumps—faces, birds, and creatures carved into the bark—adding a whimsical, artistic twist to your walk.

Western Toad Sculpture

A 4-foot-high steel sculpture by Great Bear Ironworks stands near the pond at the island’s lower end. Commissioned by Terrace Community Forest, the piece highlights the importance of the Western Toad in local ecosystems and invites discussion about conservation.

Western Toad Mural

Painted by Terrace artist Casey Braam in 2024, this vibrant mural near the playground celebrates the toads found on the island—some of which greeted the artist while he painted. It’s become a beloved family photo stop.

Carved Wooden Benches

Three artistic benches by JJs Woodart, also supported by the Terrace Community Forest, were installed in 2025. You’ll find them:

  • Overlooking the pond
  • Near the wizard carving on the east side
  • On the northwest side beyond the new bridge

Wizard & Owl Carvings

German artist Jöerg Jung contributed larger carvings including a wizard face and two owl sculptures, building on the park’s theme of hidden art and natural discovery.

Pet-Friendly, Family-Friendly

Ferry Island is welcoming to dogs and families alike.

  • Dogs must be on leash in the campground, playground, and parking areas
  • Off-leash permitted on parts of the trail and in the designated zone at the south end of the island

A volleyball net is also set up near the grassy area during summer, and the children’s playground is centrally located near the campground facilities.

Visitor Feedback Highlights

Ferry Island reviews and information on TripAdvisor.

Popular location with the perfect length hiking loop around the island. Campsites are gravel with fire rings. Showers, sinks, and toilets are well maintained. Lots of beach frontage and art hidden along the trail. Can be busy on long weekends, but the camp hosts do a great job.
