Embrace the In-between

Be one with the rain, the boots and everything transition season.

It’s that time of year when the rain sets in, the toques come out, and our boots replace the flip-flops of summer. It’s Terrace’s transition season: not quite winter, definitely not summer, but full of small adventures if you know where to look. It’s the season of trading lazy beach days for misty forest walks, when you go from paddling to waiting for the first snow, and when cozy indoor comforts start to feel extra inviting (especially with a nice hot drink in your hand!).

Howe Creek Trail

A perfect day might start with pulling on your rain gear, grabbing a hot coffee, and heading out for a trail walk while the forest smells fresh and the creeks are still running before winter sets in.

The Howe Creek Tree Park makes for an easy, in-town escape. The tall cottonwoods and evergreens provide shelter from the rain, and the sound of the creek adds a peaceful backdrop. This tree park includes heritage trees, and some really interesting signage about the plants and trees that grow here. It’s a nice, quick outside stop to breathe in the fresh air, find a bit of shelter and explore one of Terrace’s hidden gems. If you are embracing the weather, cross at the bottom of Lanfear Hill from the tree park to connect to the rest of Howe Creek trail, where wide, fairly accessible trails are connected by wooden bridges and where you’ll find some incredible wood carvings and cozy benches along the way.

Lakelse Lake Picnic Site

If you’re craving some open space, the Lakelse Lake picnic site is a great spot to reconnect with nature. Bring a thermos of hot chocolate, roast a few hot dogs under the covered shelter, and take a stroll along the beach beneath the towering cedars.

Indoor Fun

When you’re ready to warm up, Terrace has plenty of indoor options to keep you moving and social. Drop-in climbing nights are back at the Caledonia Senior Secondary School Climbing Wall every Thursday from 8-10 p.m., perfect for a little midweek challenge. Check out the Skeena Climbing Society Facebok page for more information.

The Terrace Aquatic Centre is another favourite on rainy days — the hot tub, sauna, steam room and pool make it easy to shake off the chill, and the small but well-equipped gym is great for keeping your routine on track.

Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse

On Sundays, Sherwood Mountain Brewery fills up with locals testing their trivia skills or cheering on friends at open mic night — a great way to round out a weekend.

Shames Mountain

And for those already thinking snow: it’s nearly time. Shames Mountain is just around the corner from opening day, and if you’re heading up early, remember to grab your uphill pass all pre-season access. Check the My Mountain Co-op website for the latest updates on conditions and uphill rules, and to see when passes are available.

Craft Fairs & Indoor Markets

As the weather cools down, craft fair season ramps up. The Skeena Valley Farmers Market is an annual event that takes place at the Terrace Sportsplex on the last Saturday of November. More than 64 vendors take part offering handmade crats, delicious baked goods and more. Admission is free – but consider bringing a donation of food for the Terrace Churches Food Bank.

Next up, the Kitsumkalum Christmas Gift & Craft Fair happens the first Saturday of December and is a community favourite packing the Kitsumkalum Hall with vendors. Entry is free. Get your homemade Bannock, pick up some beautiful beaded earrings, local made Christmas decorations among so many other great finds.
