MMC-Shames Mountain

Overview

My Recreational Mountain Co-operative, our legal name, is Canada's first non-profit ski community co-operative.  MMC is based in Terrace, British Columbia serving the northwest region and beyond. My Mountain Co-op is working on completing the purchase agreement from the Shames Mountain Ski Corporation  and is gearing up to operate Shames Mountain for the 2012-2013 ski season. MMC was born from another nonprofit society, Friends Of Shames (FoS). Their purpose was to support the development and long-term viability of the Shames Mountain Ski Area with a sustainable plan, resources and strategic partnerships. Since 2008 FoS has been reviewing how to keep the ski hill open and viable for the long-term. They had extensively reviewed business model options including non-profit (society), co-operative and charity business structures.  They also consulted with lawyers and consultants who specialize in non-profit and alternative business structures, as well as, hosted numerous community forums to gather feedback and encourage discussion. As a result, they determined that the community service co-operative model is the best legal structure for the ski area.

Getting Here

Located 35 Km west of Terrace BC, Shames is a small ski area in huge terrain. Just the drive to the resort on a clear day is worth the trip for the spectacular views of the coast range. With only one double chair, a T bar and  beginners handle tow, this area can't handle a lot of skiers, but then it doesn't have to. It's isolation from major population centres means that you will usually have the place to yourself.

With 1600 feet of vertical, 28 Trails and 45 hectares (111 acres) of Natural Glades it is not Whistler but with an average snowfall of 1,200cm (40 feet) a year there is plenty to keep you busy. In fact, Shames supposedly holds the record for the most annual snowfall of any lift-operated ski area in North America.

Terrain is 21% Novice, 60% Intermediate and 19% Advanced. There is a small day lodge with a resturant/bar and brown bag area.  The area is open Wednesday to Sunday only, except during School Holidays when it is open daily. There is no accommodation on the hill so you need to stay in either Terrace (closest) or Prince Rupert.
